Vertical banner in the side

I would like to add vertical block in the side. Actually would like to add the facebook api in the side, now I managed to do it but only into the footer (I have just pasted the script in the footer file, and it's working, but it would be much better to put it in a side panel under new products for example).

If memory serves you need to look at how to create a custom panel and then just add that panel to your page layouts as you would any other panel.

Pushed for time so can't help but I'm pretty sure someone has posted up how to create a custom panel somewhere.
