Changing Interspire Category Into Custom Buttons

I am wondering if i can change the look of my buttons for the main category. They are just simple text buttons now but i would like to make them into real web 2.0 buttons if possible.

If not is there a way to make them bigger or add more space around the categorys so they look a little bigger. Also how do i change what color it is when i hover over them or what they do when i hover over them. I attached an image so you no what im talking aboutg

Does anyone know? Im talking like any kind of way i can spice them up to look more quality?
